Any Italian or Spanish Lambretta cylinder can be the basis of a 25bhp Honda 205 engine unit. We have the capability of improving the power output of the standard 200 Lambretta cylinder by 300 percent with good reliability. The use of a Honda MTX piston in the ported standard cylinder for our three main stages of tuning has proved tremendously reliable. However, to retain long term reliability the motor needs to be built to survive as long as possible. If the following points are taken to heart, the engine reliability is the best we can ensure. A typical high performance Lambretta 205 scooter would be best suited by the use of the following components:
Uprated Crankshaft
A Good quality GP200 crankshaft such as a Mazzucchelli is OK for basic use, but for extra reliability a Japanese conrod fitted into a GP200 type crankshaft is preferred. 110mm long Kawasaki or Yamaha conrods are used. Yamaha conrods with TZ Yamaha/Suzuki race big-end cage and rollers, are used in the race specification engine units. We have had Crankshaft Webs made that will take the Yamaha conrods without further modifications so that the cost of our Taffspeed Yamaha GP crankshaft is comparable to a new Mazzucchelli GP unit.
These uprated crankshaft assemblies have the ability to survive at high RPM for long periods, but only when a race quality two-stroke oil is used. A further improvement in performance is to be gained by padding the crankshaft assembly with aluminium blocks before reassembly, increasing the primary compression.
The use of Yamaha rods means a packplate of approximately 3mm is used. It therefore gives the opportunity to fine tune the Porting & Cylinder head clearance by adjusting this thickness.
High Performance Flywheel Bearings
Usually of European manufacture but sometimes Japanese, these have rollers that sit in a "plastic" style cage, which allows more rollers and a greater load capacity.
They are used in all of the engine units we assemble. All other engine bearings should be of the "BEST QUALITY" to avoid premature failure. All of the bearings we sell are suitable for use in a high performance Lambretta.
GP Electronic Ignition Kit
This is highly recommended, as it gives superb lights, accurate and reliable ignition and has lighter flywheel weight. It may require slight modifications to the mag flange area to ensure that it cannot touch the flange studs and wiring clips and on some mag housings it may rub on the outer edge. The lighter flywheel weight leads to improved engine pick-up and acceleration and reduces the possibility of the crankshaft twisting around the big-end pin due to excessive loads. It does, however, need a slightly faster tickover than normal to retain smoothness - not normally a handicap on a tuned motor. It is now only available to suit non-battery systems.
If the machine has need of a battery there are special regulators that will run the lighting system AC but have a DC output to charge the battery; they need additional wiring and sometimes special ignition switches to function correctly. (We can supply details if required.)
